Do you need dental crowns?

A crown is a cap that covers a tooth to make it stronger and more aesthetically appealing. It’s cemented on and comes in many different materials including ceramic, porcelain, composite resin, metal alloy, and combinations of these materials.

There are a variety of reasons you might need a crown, including:

  1. Damage

If a tooth is cracked or weak a crown can strengthen it. It can also cover and restore a tooth that has a large cavity or has been significantly worn down.

  1. Aesthetics

A crown can improve the appearance of a tooth that is severely discolored or misshapen.

  1. Function

A crown can also cover a dental implant, restore a tooth that has had a root canal, or be attached to a dental bridge.

What to expect at your dental appointment

At your first visit, we will conduct a thorough dental exam including X-rays to make a proper diagnosis and create an individualized treatment plan. Once it’s determined that you need a crown, your tooth will undergo special preparation. In many cases, this involves numbing the area while the tooth is reshaped along the top and sides to accommodate the crown. If there has been a lot of decay or damage and some of the tooth is missing, the special filling material may be applied to the tooth so that it can handle the crown.

Next, we take a digital scan of your teeth which is sent to a lab that creates your unique crown. During this stage, we may give you a temporary crown.

Once your customized crown arrives at our office we remove the temporary one and permanently cement in the new one after ensuring the perfect fit.
